10 Films I’m Most Anticipating in 2015

From big budget blockbusters, to lower budget indie films and everything in-between, there’s never a shortage of films to watch. Each year brings plenty of new films with it, so good luck trying to stay caught up; I never can. Here are 10 films I’m most anticipating in 2015:

10. Vacation

It’s about time we revisited the Griswold family! The focus of this film is on a grown up Rusty Griswold and his family on vacation. The talented Ed Helms plays an adult Rusty, leading a talented cast including: Christina Applegate, Leslie Mann, Chris Hemsworth, Charlie Day, Samm Levine, Kaitlin Olson, and Keegan-Michael Key to name a few. Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo are also expected to return as Clark and Ellen respectively. Combine that with John Francis Daley and Johnathan Goldstein directing, this has the potential to be another funny entry in the ‘Vacation’ series.

9. Chappie

From Neill Blomkamp, the director of ‘District 9’ and ‘Elysium’ is this equally intriguing film. It features Sharlto Copley as the title character Chappie, a highly gifted robot trying to find his purpose in the world. This looks to be a film that explores the relationship between humans and technology, and begs to ask if artificial beings can be considered “human”. The trailer presents it as being thought provoking with just the right amount of heart.

8. Crimson Peak

There’s no doubt that Guillermo del Toro is one of the most ambitious directors working today. His films are stylish and it doesn’t detract from the substance of his work (arguably). ‘Crimson Peak’ looks to be a throwback film to previous Gothic horror and haunted house films, much like his most recent film ‘Pacific Rim’ was a throwback to previous giant monster and kaijū films. The cast features Mia Wasikowska, Charlie Hunnam, Tom Hiddleston, and Jessica Chastain, which is quite strong. Can’t wait till a trailer is released because it’s sure to be another captivating film from del Toro.

7. Mad Max: Fury Road

I have to admit, it’s been a while since I’ve watched the ‘Mad Max’ trilogy; it’s due for a re-watch before this long awaited and anticipated sequel hits theatres. It looks promising and action packed from the trailer and has George Miller, the director of the previous entries returning. Another plus is that it has the charismatic and intimidating Tom Hardy playing Max Rockatansky, who was previously played by Mel Gibson. Now that Gibson’s older, the recasting makes sense and I’m glad they got the right actor to portray Max. Let’s hope this was worth the wait.

6. The Revenant

To be honest, I didn’t even know about this film till about a month ago. When I found out who was involved, it became one of my must see films of 2015. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, who also directed one of 2014’s best films, ‘Birdman’, this certainly has potential. It’s a revenge film set in the 1820’s and features two actors in their prime, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy. The two previously worked together on Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception’, and it will be great to see them working together once again. High hopes for this film!

5. The Hateful Eight

Quentin Tarantino is writing & directing another western, and it has an awesome cast including: Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Samuel L. Jackson, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Zoë Bell, Bruce Dern, and Channing Tatum. On top of that, it’s being filmed right here in my home state of Colorado near Telluride! What’s not to love about that? I’m glad Tarantino decided to make this after initially claiming he wouldn’t due to the film’s script being leaked by a close and trusted party. Hoping this turns out to be just as brilliant as his previous western, ‘Django Unchained’.

4. Spectre

Even if you’re not a fan of the ‘007’ franchise, you can’t help but respect it on terms of longevity (50 plus years and still going). ‘Skyfall’ in 2012 proved to be quite a hit with Daniel Craig’s best outing as Bond yet. ‘Spectre’ looks to be another hit with Sam Mendes returning to the director’s chair and great new additions to the cast including: Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux, Monica Belluci, Andrew Scott, and Dave Bautista. I’m most certainly on board for another adventure with Bond.

3. Jurassic World

It’s been just about 14 years since the disappointing and otherwise forgettable ‘Jurassic Park III’, and it looks like we’re finally getting the ‘Jurassic Park’ sequel we deserve. The trailer gave us a first glimpse, and it looks to be one hell of a fun ride. Despite Colin Trevorrow seeming inexperienced with only one film to his credit, the romantic dramedy, ‘Safety Not Guaranteed’, I think it looks promising. His previous film was great and having 2014 breakout star Chris Pratt leading a solid cast definitely makes ‘Jurassic World’ worth the price of admission.

2. Avengers: Age of Ultron

Marvel’s on a roll and they’re showing no signs of burning out anytime soon. This year alone they brought us ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, two more excellent films in their expanding cinematic universe. The trailer for this second outing has given us a lot to be excited for. With plenty of action and a dark tone leaving us unsure of what will happen, ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ looks to be another hit.

1. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

[youtube=http://youtu.be/OMOVFvcNfvE]

Of course this was going to be number one! Star Wars was essentially part of my childhood after all. Despite the awful and disappointing prequel trilogy, I have high hopes for this. First of all, Lucas having zero involvement is a step in the right direction. Second of all, J.J. Abrams has proved himself to be a great director with the new ‘Star Trek’ films, even if they haven’t had unanimous approval. Lastly, the teaser trailer was quite good. It didn’t show us a lot, but it gave us enough to be excited about until an extended trailer comes out. I confidently say that the force is strong with this film…all we have to do now is wait patiently for its release next December.

Sorry if I’m forgetting any film you’re looking forward to, I can’t remember them all. I’m only human, Harry! There are certainly more films I’m looking forward to that didn’t make the list. It’ll be another busy year viewing wise.
