Creep (2014)

Even though the current market is oversaturated with found footage films, this is one of the better ones. Written and directed by up and coming filmmaker Patrick Brice, it’s an effective low budget horror comedy.

Patrick Brice stars as Aaron, a videographer desperate for a paying gig. He answers a Craigslist ad for a one day job to film Josef (Mark Duplass), a man who claims to be dying and wants to film a video journal for his future unborn child. The more time Aaron spends around Josef, the more he learns Josef isn’t what he initially presented himself to be.

Both Brice and Duplass are great in their roles and are the only two actors in the film. Duplass is effective at being both creepy and funny. The film starts out with a more eccentric and lighter tone as Josef is presented as being odd, but in a more humorous way. Halfway through, the tone of the film shifts and it really starts to feel like a horror film. Josef grows an attachment to Aaron, but Aaron wants none of it. It makes for a tense third act because Josef is so creepy and unpredictable.

Overall, it’s an impressive found footage film that is carried by the acting and writing talents of both Brice and Duplass. It leaves you guessing and doesn’t feel formulaic like a majority of films in the found footage subgenre. And the ending — it’s really something.
