Well, J.J. Abrams did what George Lucas failed to do; he gave us the awesome Star Wars film that we all wanted and deserved several years after Return of the Jedi concluded the original trilogy. Everything we loved about the original trilogy is all here, and so is the passion for the story and characters, something that was missing from that other so called trilogy.
The seventh entry in the franchise picks up 30 years after Return of the Jedi and the defeat of the Empire. The First Order, the successor to the Empire has risen to power and is in search of Luke Skywalker, who’s disappeared. It’s up to the Resistance and a few unlikely allies to find Luke before the First Order can and to put an end to their tyranny.
Where to start? All of the new lead characters are great and well developed. Rey (Daisy Ridley) is smart and self-sufficient, and another strong female character the franchise deserves (and needs). Finn (John Boyega) is a conflicted First Order stormtrooper, who decides to turn to his back on what they stand for and join the Resistance. Poe Cameron (Oscar Isaac) is a charismatic Resistance pilot who’s saved by Finn. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) is the evil commander of the First Order who possesses the force. Additionally, Domhnall Gleeson is delightfully evil as General Hux of the First Order and Andy Serkis gives another flawless motion capture performance as Supreme Leader Snoke, the new face of the dark side. The new faces mesh well with the old faces, and thanks to some strong writing and direction, the film has genuine emotion, some shocking revelations, and is very much in tone with the original films we grew up loving. As for the action and visuals, it’s not a CGI orgy like that other so called trilogy. It all looks and feels authentic.
So, was it worth the wait and did it live up to the hype? Absolutely! J.J. Abrams did the impossible, and much respect to him for that. The force is strong with this film, and the future of the Star Wars franchise looks brighter now.
