Burying the Ex (2014)

A horror rom-com from director Joe Dante, how could you go wrong? The critics didn’t take too kind to it, but I dug it.

After a freak accident takes the life of his controlling and self-righteous girlfriend, Max (Anton Yelcin) finds himself in over his head when she returns from the grave and complicates his chances of getting together with Olivia (Alexandra Daddario), his dream girl.

I found Max to be such an awesome character and even relatable. I’ve never been in a relationship with a strict and overbearing girl mind you, but I’m a huge horror/Halloween buff like his character is. He works at Halloween store too! The horror film clips and references featured throughout are very welcome and it’s great how they made Olivia such a horror hottie! It certainly helps that they cast the stunning Alexandra Daddario in the role. In contrast, Ashley Greene nails her role as Evelyn, his girlfriend, a pretentious environmentalist who’s not right for him. A lot of the film’s humor rests on her return from the grave and insisting they’re still meant for each other, despite the fact that she’s a zombie. Max’s half-brother, Travis (Oliver Cooper) also provides some solid comic relief despite being stuck in the best buddy archetype. It’s a trope we’re familiar with in the rom-com genre, and it works here.

Overall, I enjoyed it. Not Dante’s best work, but I still recommend it. Also, be on the lookout for a Dick Miller cameo!
