Considering Z Nation is a SyFy channel series and produced by The Asylum, you think it would be terrible, but it’s not. Is it riding on the coat tails of The Walking Dead’s success? Absolutely, but unlike the other show, it’s more consistent and isn’t overly brooding. It knows how to have fun and embraces its lower production values.
The central premise of the show is that a group of survivors in a zombie apocalypse must transport a survivor infected with the “Z virus” cross country so a vaccine can be developed to save humanity. A lot of the episodes become really over the top and ridiculous, but you just have so much fun watching. My favorite episode happens to be “Full Metal Zombie” where they end up having to fight their way through zombie soldiers on a military base. Bill Moseley plays the military general gone bonkers in that episode. One episode also features a zombie bear. Yep, that’s right, a zombie bear! The cheesy and sometimes laughably bad effects really add to the show’s charm, especially when it goes over the top. Also can’t help but love the overuse of stock screams!
As far as the characters go, they’re actually well developed and not shitty or anything. The primary female characters on the show are all strong and likeable, unlike some of the ones that were featured on that other show. My favorite happens to be Addy (Anastasia Baranova), a hot redhead who really knows how to kick zombie ass. Doc (Russell Hodgkinson) is another favorite character who’s great comic relief. Murphy (Keith Allan), the man infected with the virus is also a real smart ass. DJ Quails is also awesome as “Citizen Z”, an NSA employee stuck in the Artic who assists the group on their journey. The pilot episode sets up one character to be a main protagonist on the show, but then you’re trolled when he unexpectedly gets killed off at the end. I won’t spoil who it is!
Overall, season one has proved that this show is a lot of fun, even more so than The Walking Dead. *prepares to be stoned to death for said statement*
